Abstract

Underground cable specially medium voltage cable widely used in cities, these cables consist of screen (copper in case of medium voltage cable), this screen shield almost of electrical field but cannot totally shield low frequency magnetic field. This magnetic flux density becomes greater with increasing current. People exposed to this kind of magnetic field may lead to health problem. There are some limit values are introduced by the "International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection" (ICNIRP). In this paper magnetic flux density has been measured by an experimental setup at different currents using a single core cable 18/30Kv, 800mm², AL/XLPE/AWA/PVC, and then check these results with the limiting values. By using the highest measured value of the magnetic field density and the applied technique of calculating the induced currents in human body, the obtained result can demonstrate the degree of danger due to the induced current from both magnetic and electric fields, comparing these results by the values given by( ICNIRP) guidelines can tell the degree of danger.  Also this paper presents the effects of this magnetic field on human health and mitigation methods to reduce it.
