Abstract

A good characterization of the transmission properties of the electrical network is the first step to reach a high quality of supply and increased resiliency with the use of new services based on NB-PLC. This paper describes the empirical characterization of the transmission losses of the electrical grid for the frequency range assigned to NB-PLC (40 kHz to 500 kHz). The methodology is applied to a measurement campaign in a rural distribution grid. Results show that the transmission losses depend on the distance and grid topology. The great influence of the noise and non-intentional emissions on the Signal to Noise Ratio of the received signals within the frequency range used for NB-PLC is also shown with empirical results.
