Abstract
The performance demands placed on traditionalprotection systems are increasing due to higher numbersof Distributed Generation (DG) connecting to the networkcoupled with the roll-out of network flexibility servicessuch as automatic network reconfiguration. This paperproposes the design and architecture for a DynamicProtection System (DPS). DPS is an adaptive protectionsystem that autonomously calculates the optimumprotection functions and settings in real-time as thedistribution network changes configuration. DPS has thecapability to bring increased protection system sensitivityand selectivity over traditional protection schemes, facilitate increased DG connections to the network andautomate aspects of the protection system design process. The key design requirements for the proposed DPS arediscussed and the detailed benefits of the system aredescribed.
